{"id":497,"date":"2011-09-16T10:36:18","date_gmt":"2011-09-16T15:36:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/d-n-i.com\/tidbits\/?p=497"},"modified":"2011-09-16T10:56:56","modified_gmt":"2011-09-16T15:56:56","slug":"dan-levitt-is-a-terrific-baseball-writer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/d-n-i.com\/tidbits\/2011\/09\/16\/dan-levitt-is-a-terrific-baseball-writer\/","title":{"rendered":"Dan Levitt is a Terrific Baseball Writer"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_500\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-500\" style=\"width: 198px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-500 \" title=\"Paths to Glory, How Great Baseball Teams Got That Way\" src=\"http:\/\/d-n-i.com\/tidbits\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/paths-to-glory-how-great-baseball-teams-got-that-way.jpg\" alt=\"Paths to Glory, How Great Baseball Teams Got That Way\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-500\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paths to Glory, How Great Baseball Teams Got That Way<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I recently read the book &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/daniel-levitt.com\/publications\/paths-to-glory\/\">Paths to Glory, How Great Baseball Teams Got That Way<\/a>&#8221; by <a href=\"http:\/\/daniel-levitt.com\/about-dan\/\">Daniel Levitt<\/a>, a Minneapolis-based baseball scholar (and real estate developer) and Mark Armour (happily, a Red Sox fan) and it was really quite interesting and engaging.<\/p>\n<p>Why is it interesting that it was interesting to me? \u00a0Mostly, because\u00a0I find baseball incredibly slow and painful to watch more that 3 times a season. \u00a0Reading about our &#8220;national game&#8221; is not something I do very frequently.<\/p>\n<p>The book uses both narrative and\u00a0statistics\u00a0to compellingly argue the where the\u00a0competitive\u00a0edge comes from for baseball teams. \u00a0It leads to thinking about how those\u00a0decisions\u00a0can be made in other area of life. \u00a0And isn&#8217;t baseball supposed to be a\u00a0metaphor\u00a0for life and all sorts of other stuff?<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I highly recommend it and and even bought it for a baseball-nut\u00a0friend\u00a0of mine (who says he loved it).<\/p>\n<p>Why did I single Mr. Levitt out when there are co-authors?, you ask. \u00a0It is because this book got me to purchase his other book &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/daniel-levitt.com\/publications\/ed-barrow\/\">Ed Barrow: The Bulldog Who Built the Yankees\u2019 First Dynasty<\/a>&#8220;. \u00a0I am in the midst of reading it and am giving it a big thumbs-up. \u00a0Will see if Mr. Armour has written anything else in the near future&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently read the book &#8220;Paths to Glory, How Great Baseball Teams Got That Way&#8221; by Daniel Levitt, a Minneapolis-based baseball scholar (and real estate developer) and Mark Armour (happily, a Red Sox fan) and it was really quite interesting and engaging.
